In the morning and evening rush hours Metrolink operate some services with two units coupled together.
Two of the stops in the city centre, Mosley Street and St. Peters Square have a full-height section long enough only for a single unit. When two units run together the rear unit stops at a lower-height section of the platform, and retractable steps enable passengers to board and alight. When Metrolink first opened, this situation was repeated at Piccadilly Gardens, Market Street and High Street (now closed) stops, but these stops now have platforms which are full-height for their entire length.
