Gateshead Stadium station is an island platform, adjacent to the Newcastle–Middlesbrough railway line. To the west of the station, the Metro tracks part company with the railway line, heading into a cutting before diving into a tunnel to reach Gateshead station.

The station was originally to have been called Old Fold.
